There does not seem to be a set way of specifying an injection mold for a mold maker to follow the specs and quote so as to make tool. Each molding factory seem to spec the mold for their particular needs and each mold maker seems to have their own forms and standards, so is it any wonder we get such a wide variations in quotation for mold making jobs.

I would like to outline my process of specifying a mold, it is not an extensive list and you may have to add to it for your own mold. It may not be your job to design the mold however if you are looking for a mold maker at home or abroad to make the then you should initially outline the design. The injection mold manufacturer should be able to specify any issue they see and it is all so a good way of comparing the design skill and knowledge of each of your potential tool makers. They should be able to advise you if your estimations needs rethinking, however my advise would be not to leave the key decisions entirely to the mold make. How To Choose The Right Mould Manufacturer China(2)

Price is a factor but should not be the main factor. The main factor is need to think about when considering your China mould manufacturer is the quality. So asking them for examples of molds them have produced in the past is a good way of judging their quality. Better again would be getting examples of molds they have done that is similar to what you need done would be a great way of assessing their build quality.  If you can get to see one of their molds running in production that would tell you a bit about the build reliability, however be careful here some China mould manufacturers maybe tempted to pull the wool over your eyes by showing you somebody else work.

My best advice would be to take the time visit 3 to 4 mould makers in the same area, there are a lot of mold makers around ShenZhen area of China, thats just over the boarder from Hong Kong. Visit 3 or four of them. Rate there tool room equipment, how new is it, how well maintenanced is it, how organised is the factory and how motivated are the employees or do they all run out the door at 5. All these things will impact your experience with the China mould manufacturer.

China mould manufacturers have got a bad reputation over the years. I guess it is something like buying a Japanese car some people have good experience and some have bad experience with it. Does that mean all cars Japanese cars are doggie or bad, no not at all but it does help to have experience in buying cars to spot the car that is going to give you trouble. 

Just like that it is important to have experience dealing with China mould manufacturers so as you can spot those that are overselling themselves. Personally when I hear them saying "no problem, we can do that" I get worried. You really have to know how to ask them the right questions and push them for answers while also building a good relationship with them.

Most China mould manufacturers have a young lady doing the overseas sales, while this is all nice eye candy for the lads and not to be disrespectful to them as most of them do a great job. You as the client must understand the sales lady does not know or understand all the details that goes into the mold build, she really is for communication and all the design decisions are made by the senior designer. So if you want to stream line your mold build it is worth getting to know this key designer, however the designer many not speak fluent english. So this should be a consideration you need to factor in when choosing your next China mould manufacturer.

Details of the tool making estimate. When the tool is first quoted for by the sales manager of the China injection mold manufacturer they make certain estimates for mold material costs, design costs, machining costs, assembling costs, trials costs, texturing and finishing costs pus delivery costs. The quotes should include as much of this information as possible so that the designed and the customer know what is expected. It will also help the designer to high light problems if material or parts are more than was estimated initially.

Part drawing. A fully detailed part drawing must be available, with part dimensions, tolerance and material clearly specified on the drawing. Any questions the mold designer may have should be discussed with the customer and if modification are needed the part drawings must be updated for the new part design. It is very important that both the China injection mold manufacturer, mold designer and customer are working from the same part drawing so as to avoid expensive mistakes. Part geometry. The part drawing must be examined carefully so that the mold designer clearly understands the part and how it is to be molded. For example the mold designer must be able to decide whether it is a simple two plate mold, three-plate mold, multiple plate mold, side core, split stack mold etc. Also perhaps it is a case where the part would be easier and cheaper to mold as separate parts, this may simplify the design costs while adding to the mold material cost, however this is a point that would need to be discussed with the China injection mold manufacturer.
