There does not seem to be a set way of specifying an injection mold for a mold maker to follow the specs and quote so as to make tool. Each molding factory seem to spec the mold for their particular needs and each mold maker seems to have their own forms and standards, so is it any wonder we get such a wide variations in quotation for mold making jobs.

I would like to outline my process of specifying a mold, it is not an extensive list and you may have to add to it for your own mold. It may not be your job to design the mold however if you are looking for a mold maker at home or abroad to make the then you should initially outline the design. The injection mold manufacturer should be able to specify any issue they see and it is all so a good way of comparing the design skill and knowledge of each of your potential tool makers. They should be able to advise you if your estimations needs rethinking, however my advise would be not to leave the key decisions entirely to the mold make. Take the lead in specifying your own mold.
