What does the manufacturing process look like for insert molding?

Insert molding is the process of molding thermoplastic material around a preformed component (an insert) to create a finished part that incorporates multiple materials. The inserts are typically metal parts that are used to reinforce the mechanical properties of the plastic part. The inserts are placed into the mold and thermoplastic is injected into the mold to form the part.  As compared to installing inserts into a plastic part in a post-molding process, the use of molded-in inserts eliminates the need for secondary installation of the inserts and thereby reduces costs.

Thermoset Plastic Pros

The strong molecular bonds provide additional strength to the material, and in some instances, the inability for the plastic to re-melt can be a benefit. In general, thermoset plastics have:

Chemical Resistance: Due to their chemical bonding during the process, thermoset plastics are less susceptible to damage from chemicals and corrosion.

Thermal Resistance: Because these plastics cannot be re-melted, they have higher temperature resistance.

Higher Rigidity: They have an overall higher mechanical strength and dimensional stability due to the cross-linked molecules.

 


Thermoset Plastic Cons

While thermoset plastics have their strengths, they can also be weaknesses. This comes from not only their strengths but also their place in the industry in general.

Availability: Before injection, thermoset plastics are liquids. Between handing, the need for modifications or special injection molds, and the general decline of use, they may be more difficult to find suppliers that carry them.

Un-Recyclable: As mentioned above, thermoset plastics cannot be re-melted, and therefore cannot be recycled into new plastics.

Lower Impact Resistance: While thermoset plastics have higher strength, they have a lower resistance when it comes to impacts. While harder, it tends to shatter instead of flex.

Why Use Thermoset Molding?

Thermoset materials are generally stronger than thermoplastic materials due to the catalysts that are added to the base compound that cause chemical reactions at the molecular level, forming a harder, irreversible final form. Thermoset plastics cannot be re-melted, only ground and recycled as filler for different applications.

 

Thermoset molded products have electrical and thermal insulation properties, which make them ideal for electrical and electronic applications. They are resistant to corrosion and have high impact strength, depending on the resin, and are cost competitive with engineered thermoplastics. Using thermoset molding allows producers to maintain tighter tolerances during the molding process compared to similar thermoplastic materials.

Collapsible core injection molding applies on plastic injection molding and extrusion, that is good for the parts what inner cavity dimension is bigger than outer dimension, it could demould quickly and successfully when injection and extrusion, such as pipe/fittings with collapsible, instrument shell, sealed gate. etc.

The collapsible core having a straight pin improved stability of the collapsible core segments improving the dimensional accuracy of the molded part. The pin diameter matches the inside diameter of the segments and by being contained by a stripper or containment ring matched to the outside of the segments the pin and the segmented sleeves are self-centering and extremely accurate.

 

Shorter and spring-loaded segments reduce the possibility of injection pressure opening the segments. This reduces the time for injection and reduces cycle time. The increased contact area between the pin and the collapsible core segments improves mold cooling allowing for faster cycle times. The change of shape of the contact area between the segments and the pin, rounded surfaces moving across flat surfaces, reduces wear allowing for less maintenance.
