The Dragon Boat Festival, also often known as the Tuen Ng or Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday which occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar. This year it falls on June 9.

The Dragon Boat Festival first held is to commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan (c.?340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty, but in the modern China the focus of most celebrations involves eating zongzi (sticky rice treats wrapped in bamboo leaves) and racing dragon boats.

3 side affect the right price for mold

In many cases asking mold makers to bid on a new mold is like going to a home builder and stating that you want a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house with a 2 1/2 car garage and wanting the price. There is way too much information missing. Many home builders simply will not supply a quote until they have a design to look at. Give 5 shops the same part print and 3D part file and all 5 many see this mold entirely differently depending upon how the RFQ was written. The best way to get an accurate quote is with a complete list of specifications and a preliminary design or sketch. The clearer the information that more accurate the quotes. Which side will affect its price?

Materials can be a big cost driver. There are typically two types of mold suppliers. One supplier focuses only on having the lower possible price. These mold makers typically cut every corner they can to be able to provide the lowest cost. This can mean buying the lowest priced steel they can find. They will purchase the cheapest grades of carbon for making electrodes. They will make the mold base as small as possible to save $50 to $100 on steel. This could easily mean a mold base that will flex and move under injection pressure. The other type of mold supplier is one who is focused on quality. They tend to purchase the best grades of steel, install better quality components and design molds that are more robust.

The other big cost driver is quality. Let's take the mold base for instance. You can purchase a pre-made mold from many sources. You can buy an A style or a B style mold base. The A style mold base might be easier for the mold maker to machine but the strength of the mold base might be greatly diminished. We build all of our mold bases from scratch. We purchase the best quality pre-hardened tool steel plates, do all of the rough machining, drill all of the waterlines before we do any of the finished machining of mold base pockets, parting line lock pockets and leader pin and bushing holes. This is the only way the mold base can be exact. The mold base is the foundation and if you don't have a good foundation your mold is not going to perform well or last the life of the program.

One last thing to point out is what is the current economic conditions and size of the mold supplier. Smaller shops tend to be lower priced but they lack the depth to offer quicker deliveries and if there is a mistake or a change they can't always react as quickly. Smaller shops also in some cases don't have the level of engineering support in-house, which means they will cut corners getting the mold design done for less. When the economy is soft smaller shops tend to cut prices just to keep their valuable employees working. There is a big risk to have a small shop loaded with low margin work only to find out the company owner is closing his doors because his company has failed. I have seen when I requested 10 suppliers in China to bid on a new mold project and the prices ranged over 300% from low to high. The lowest price was what I had estimated it would take just for materials. Obviously I knew that was a blown quote and I could not afford to buy such a cheap tool.

Injection Molding 5 Lessons Learned(2)

Today, I will share the remaining lessons about injection molding with you.

Lesson 3: Not verifying fill only weight at startup. To replicate the fill portion of the cycle we need to know how much material we injected and how long it took. The two tools we will use to evaluate the fill is the fill time and the fill only part weight. By matching the fill time and fill only part weight we know that the same amount of plastic has been injected over the same time. By using these two pieces of data we have a result that gives us weight injected/fill time which can be converted to a volumetric flow rate. To keep a consistent process we must know that this volumetric flow rate is the same from shot to shot and run to run.

Lesson 4: To conduct a gate seal study first remove the runners. This can trip people up when running a gate seal study, we are concerned about the part side of the gate not the runners! If you are weighing the gate seal parts with runners you will be conducting a runner/sprue seal study. We are not concerned about if the runners can be packed more we are concerned about packing the part.

Lesson 5: Steel hand tools in the mold cavity. Do not allow the mentality of “I have done this for years” to override the right thing to do, all it takes is one slip. The lesson here is no steel tools in the mold and buy your techs the brass and bronze tools they need. Years ago I ran into a couple of cases where when we reviewed the mold damage it was possible to lay a pair nippers perfectly into the gouge on the parting line. This is a risk that is really not worth taking, the potential damage may cause scrap or downtime plus the expense of repair.

Happy weekend in Park Lane Harbor--Sales Team#2 of WIT MOLD

Last weekend, our sales team #2 of WIT MOLD had a great time in Park Lane Harbor. Attached please find the pics, hope you would like it.

It was raining hard on Saturday, but we still stay with the plan. In the early morning, we went to an ancient temple to make wishes and pray for good luck. On the way to the mountain top, we met large areas of wild flowers, everything is just perfect! There is a different beauty walking and sightseeing in the rain, and sometimes there is surprise, you should try.

Apart from this, we also ride horses and take sailboat, this is the first time we did this, it was so exciting and unforgettable. After 2 days’ relax, we are totally refreshed, ready for new challenges in the new week.

There is an old saying in ancient China, which is learn well or play well. At weekend, we have fun and in the weekday, we will work hard and provide higher quality plastic injection molding for customer.
